The Goden Pen
Bollywood in the early 20th Century fired the imagination of thousands of young men and women, many of whom had to run away from home to join the movies (Bollywood in those days was not a reputable profession) chasing fame and fortune. Among them was a young man in the then literary capital of India, Lucknow.
THE GOLDEN PEN is a fast-paced slice of life based in early Bollywood on his journey. It follows the footsteps of one of Bollywood most prolific writers, who penned about 50 movies. It is the story of Aghajani Kashmeri, as conceived, produced and narrated by his son, Zuhair Kashmeri, a Canadian writer and journalist. It begins at his father's grave in Toronto, and proceeds to Lucknow. His sister's grandchildren recall family folklore about an icon amid the backdrop of stunning old architectural marvels and a recreated neighbourhood Mushaira (poetry session) on the terrace of a noblemans villa. It then moves to Mumbai, the heart of Bollywood, where it picks up film footage, interviews with Bollywood actors and others reminiscing about a man who entertained six generations of Indians. Their memories are embellished with lively footage from his films. It ends at his grave, using footage and interviews about his final years in Canada, a fish out of water, unrecognized and trapped. The Golden Pen is part comedy, part tragedy, part travelogue about a time when Bollywood sought out originality in a pre and post-Colonial India. It is also a son's tribute to a father who inspired him in more ways than one.
